Biography

1941–2025

Georgian painter Getman Topuria was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 1941. He graduated from the Tbilisi Art School in 1960 and later from the Faculty of Painting at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 1967. Alongside producing realist paintings that met the strict demands of Socialist Realism, he explored the expressive techniques of Impressionism and Modernism.

Topuria was a member of the official Artists' Union of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic. He participated in Soviet regional mandatory exhibitions, completing state commissions on Socialist Realism themes.

However, alongside these public commissions, he quietly pursued his passion for more personal subjects, creating portraits, landscapes, abstract compositions, and studies of the nude figure.

These works, initially kept out of the public eye, emerged after the fall of the Soviet regime in Georgia. In 1991-1992, Topuria held solo exhibitions in Italy, showcasing his art in galleries in Brescia and Milan. His works were well-received and quickly became part of private collections.

Topuria's works span various media, including oil, tempera, pastel, watercolor, and pencil.

In 2017, he retired due to mental health issues caused by dementia. Although he no longer recognizes family members, he still recognizes all his paintings. With no perception of the passage of time, he believes he continues to paint each day…
